Real steel bushcraft plus convex. Real steel human. Real steel 2. Real steel 2011. Real steel hammer. Real steel toys. Amazon real steel champions game. Excavator real steel. We've still got two months in the year left, but I'm about ready to crown Real Steel as the most fun I've had with any 2011 movie.
The year is 2020. The world has outgrown traditional human boxing, and has moved on to fights between robots controlled by their human owners. Former boxing pro, Charlie (Played by Hugh Jackman) has suffered a string of losses and broken bots. He gets a wake up call when he meets his son, Max, whom he hasn't seen since he was born. Hoping to make a change in the robot arenas, Max finds a robot named ATOM, a robot "designed to take a lot of punches, but never dish out any real punishment. But Charlie begins training ATOM, and the bot becomes a rising name in true underdog fashion, helping Charlie to fix up his life, and even learn to be a better person.
Real Steel works best as a warm homage to the underdog films of the '70s and '80's, specifically Rocky. Once you get past the silly premise, what follows is an unexpected triumph for Shawn Levy. Finally, he makes a movie driven more by genuine heart and honest characterization rather than the barrage of fast paced slapstick humor and eccentricity that plagued Cheaper by the Dozen and the Pink Panther remakes.
Some may argue that the screenplay has faults. At just about every turn, you can pretty much predict what will happen next. But you know what? Predictability has only been a problem for me if the story isn't any good. There's times where the movie gets obnoxious, and when it seems to slow down, but those are my only major gripes about the film. Yes, there's schmaltz, but Real Steel does schmaltz right. It's also a long movie, but I was so into it that it just flew right by. br>. . of that may be due to the robot fights, which I can only describe with two words: FREAKING AWESOME! They're slickly edited, incredibly exciting, and the visuals and sound design are rendered and mixed with surprising finesse. They collectively form more fun than I've had with any of this year's summer blockbusters I've seen combined. Finally, I'll close off by commending composer Danny Elfman. With any luck and any justice in the world, he'll be on his way to the Oscars with a nomination for Best Original Score.
